“No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the nativity of our common Adam.” -Charles Lamb

“Upon careful examination we notice that the dark highlights of the garments reveal themselves as a seated ox in the lower right; two bird-like specimens to its left and a darting horse along the left shoulder of the Holy Mother. It is only after giving the painting our entire focus and undivided attention that Dali rewards us by unveiling the true complexity of “The Holy Family.”- Paul Chimera, Dali Historian.
The Holy Family was created by Dali in 1959 as a Christmas card Hallmark

The New Salvador Dali Society Building, originally built in 1959 has only sprung one leak from all of this rain. Above is a picture of our local Little League Field in Manhattan Beach. I won many games there a a coach, of course when it was dry.

We had to dig out the old cast iron plumbing as it was rotted out. We also had to replace all the galvanized plumbing with copper. We cut the concrete with a walk behind concrete saw that I found at a pawn shop in Riverside, CA. It was practically new. Then we dug out the trenches by hand.

Many of you have been asking about the progress on the new building so I thought I would include it in the blog.
After getting all the approvals necessary from the city of Torrance we began construction several months ago. The next several posts will bring you up to date on the progress of the building.
A little history – The building sits on the edge of Old Torrance which is a redevelopment zone for the city of Torrance. Old Torrance is developing into a quite a town. It is already known for old businesses like the Torrance Bakery (croissants on a par with Paris) and one of the first Foster Freeze ice cream parlors in CA. In addition there are also some new buildings; a residential/condominium development sits just down the street from my place. I am excited to see what businesses will eventually occupy the ground floor retail spaces.
The building has been neglected for many years. For a while it was a dancing school, in fact the dancing school floor still remains on one side. I gave the bars to the dancing school up the street. Then it was abandoned for a number of years. Apparently there were some “raves” in there as well. This may explain why when we pulled off the drywall, we found brick that was painted purple. A woman bought it several years ago with the plan to put in a pool hall, but the city would not approve. When she lost it in foreclosure, I was able to buy it.
The interior walls are red brick. They were painted in a variety of colors so we went about removing the paint. I will post photos. It had about 5 coats of paint from white to gray to purple. We used a biodegradable stripper, with no VOC’s. Although it took a lot longer than the strong stuff, I had no interest in polluting the environment or my lungs. There was the option of sand blasting the brick, but when I tried it on a sample it tore the veneer off of the brick leaving it soulless and injured. So we took our time stripping and scrapping until we got it off. It took months, but the result is quite nice and the smooth red skin of the brick remains intact.
The exterior brick was painted yellow and the building had boisterous red awnings like you see in the picture. We removed the awnings and sold them on craigslist. Someone had come along and shot out one of the front windows so we had to board it up. (They later caught the guy, he used to like to go out in the middle of the night and shoot out windows in Torrance.) Apparently it was the idea of some commercial real estate brokers to spray paint the exterior brick before it went up for sale. We are now in the process of getting it off and I will tell you what we find underneath.
Anyway, she is a lovely old gal. She was just wearing too much cheap makeup. She needs a bit of affection. We intend to give it to her in abundance. – Joe

I love the great little book
which illustrates the Philippe Halsman photos of Salvador Dali. Above is one of my favorites. It reminds me of the lyrics to “Have a Cigar” by Pink Floyd “You’re gonna fly high, you’re never gonna die, you’re gonna make it if you try, they’re gonna love you.”

Old Age, Adolescence, Infancy (The Three Ages) – Salvador Dalí, 1940

Chief Bromden: My pop was real big. He did like he pleased. That’s why everybody worked on him. The last time I seen my father, he was blind and diseased from drinking. And every time he put the bottle to his mouth, he don’t suck out of it, it sucks out of him until he shrunk so wrinkled and yellow even the dogs didn’t know him.
McMurphy: Killed him, huh?
Chief Bromden: I’m not saying they killed him. They just worked on him. The way they’re working on you.
